To accompany the wave of attention surrounding former-president Clinton, I offer this recent case from the Eleventh Circuit: U.S. v. Harris. The case is primarily concerned with defendant's Speedy Trial Act, Sixth Amendment, and sufficiency of the evidence challenges to his conviction for fraudulent use of a social security number. Here's the juice: During a traffic stop, defendant proffered three obviously fake IDs to the police. When officer Green inquired to whom the Social Security number on the identification cards belonged, Harris twanged, "The old boy it belongs to in Arkansas wouldn't appreciate knowing that I was using it." Ultimately, Green discovered that the Social Security number on the cards belonged to then-President William Jefferson Clinton. Bill, I can empathize -- identity theft is a real hassle. Here are some helpful related resources (although you've probably straightened this mess out by now): |
