Dealing With SPAM
« Assuming that an open process can come up with a set of guidelines for legal blogs, should it be strictly about ethics and style? What about technical issues? Archiving? | Main | Diameteric Inopposition »

SPAM is not new, but it constantly finds new ways to present itself.

Aside from filing lengthy civil actions, we're curious as to what you are doing to limit SPAM postings on your blog.

Specifically:
1) Which tools and processes are the best/worst for combatting unwanted advertisements?
2) What kinds of protections are available (blocking or filtering)?
3) How effective are the solutions (false positives)?

Just remember "spam rage" is not the answer!

For blogs based on Movable Type, Jay Allen's MT-Blacklist http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/ , which will block comment spam based on the URL strings. Future version will allow p2p sharing of the blacklisted URLs. More info at: http://www.jayallen.org/comment_spam/

Ok so there are two kinds of spam. E-mail and blog comment box.

The e-mail spam I take care of with my spam assassin which goes with my webhosting package.

The comment box spam is taken care of my MT-Blacklist courtesy of Jay Allen.

What do I think of spam? Well, there are shitheads in any medium. Spammers are it in the internet. Sue them? Won't waste my time. The law is an an effective solution to every problem.

If anyone wants more details (I've documented the spambot attacks in my blogs), please see them here :

MT Blacklist is in full effect on this and several other blogs hosted here. The only problem is going to sleep at night. Then, when you wake up, there are a dozen or more posts that have been stewing for several hours, getting spidered by google, and moving you up in the search results for \/14gr4 (pardon the h4x0r, I can't stand getting hits off that dreck).
